Sophia Obzud, 99, of New York City and formerly of Simpson, died Thursday at Alan Pavilion-Columbia Medical Center. She was the widow of Andrew Obzud, who died in 1992.

Born in Simpson in 1914, daughter of the late Julius and Anna Fedorchak Budwell, she attended school in Fell Twp. and later was employed by the Gentex Corp., Simpson. She had been a member of St. Michael's Church, Simpson.
She moved to New York City several years ago to live with her grandchildren.
Sophia was an avid quilter, knitter and crafter. She was also an excellent chef, well-known for her fabulous polish delicacies. Sophia was kind, loving generous and sassy. At 99, she had a lifetime of stories and experiences to share. She had a powerful impact on everyone she came in contact with and will be greatly missed.
Surviving are four grandchildren, Austin Jr., Adrienne, Amanda and Allison During, with whom she resided; and her son-in-law, Austin During Sr., all of whom are from the New York City area.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Julius; a daughter, Karen During; and 10 brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the Joseph W. Scotchlas Funeral Home Inc., 621 Main St., Simpson, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Michael's Church, 46 Midland St., Simpson. Interment, St. Michael's Cemetery.
