Tara Lee Ruddy of West Scranton died Thursday afternoon at home.
Born in Scranton, daughter of Leo and Mary Theresa O'Malley Ruddy, she was educated in Scranton schools. She was a 2003 graduate of West Scranton High School. She was most recently a senior at Marywood University, majoring in social work.
She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, West Scranton, and was a committee member for the Paul "Hook" O'Malley Race against Cancer. She also volunteered for the Women's Resource Center.
Tara was a loving and devoted daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece and cousin who had a great sense of humor and the ability to light up any room anywhere. She loved all animals and would never let a stray be abandoned. She would always bring them home and, with help from her family, she would care for them, adopt them and love them.
She was a Brownie and later became a Girl Scout. As a student at Charles Sumner Elementary School, she was awarded the Presidential Award for maintaining five consecutive years of achieving an above-B-plus average in every subject. She was also an honors student at West Scranton High School.
Tara was very athletic, playing softball in the West Scranton Miss-E League, basketball at Holy Cross Hall, St. Ann's Lyceum and West Scranton Intermediate School. She was a member of the Sienko Ryu Karate Club of Marywood University, and was first violinist in the orchestra at West Scranton High School.
She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Also surviving are a sister, Kelly, at home; maternal grandmother, Ann Marie DeBuvitz O'Malley, Scranton; paternal grandparents, Robert and Rose Curmaci Ruddy, Clarks Summit; aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by maternal grandfather Paul "Hook" O'Malley; an aunt, Margie Holodnak Davis; and an uncle, Paul O'Malley.
The funeral will be Monday at the Carl J. Savino Funeral Home, 157 S. Main Ave., Scranton, with Mass at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, Oram Street. Entombment, Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday, 5 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Paul "Hook" O'Malley Race against Cancer Fund, c/o 1810 Academy St., Scranton PA 18504.
