Thomas McGowan, 80, of Stanhope, N.J., formerly of Scranton, died early Thanksgiving following injuries sustained in an automobile crash. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Catherine Komendat McGowan.

Born and raised in the Scranton area, Tom graduated from Clarks Summit High School in 1950. He served in the 503rd Parachute Infantry Regiment during the Korean War. Tom began his career of almost 40 years as a railroad engineer for the Lackawanna Railroad and worked for several other railroads until his retirement. His hobbies were reading, military history, building miniature railroads and watching Notre Dame football. Tom was a member of VFW Post 2347 and American Legion Post 278.

Also surviving are his children, Kathleen Root, Geneseo, N.Y.; Kevin and wife, Jessica, Duson, La.; and Dennis and wife, Kim, Scranton; grandchildren, Marissa McGowen, Scranton; Denny McGowan and fiancée, Rebecca Doran, Scranton; Kaitlin Root, Columbia, S.C.; Kelly Root, Pittsburgh; Molly and James Root, Geneseo, N.Y.; Mark McGowan, Duson, La.; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his son, Terry.

The funeral will be Saturday with a blessing service at noon in the Nicholas Chomko Funeral Home, 1132 Prospect Ave., Scranton. Interment with military honors by the Dickson City Veterans Honor Guard, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

Friends may call Saturday, 10 until time of service. Memorials may be made to the VFW or American Legion post of your choice.
