Walter E. Fay, 90, of Childs, died Thursday at the Dunmore Healthcare Center after an illness. His wife, the former Phyllis Howe, died in February 2011.

Born in Carbondale, son of the late Edward and Elizabeth Horan Fay, he was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. He was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, class of 1942. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served on the USS New Orleans, where he participated in 11 major battles and witnessed the flag raising over Iwo Jima. He was a member of VFW Post 4712, Simpson, and American Legion Post 869, Archbald. Before his retirement, he was employed as an engineer on the Delaware and Hudson Railroad.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary Beth Pish, Olyphant; and Ann Fay, Carbondale; three sons, Donald, Carbondale; Martin, Scranton; and Edward, Silver Springs, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a great-grandchild, Justin Ormes.

The funeral will be Tuesday at the Brennan & Brennan Funeral Home Inc., 55 Lincoln Ave., Carbondale, with a blessing service at 11 a.m. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.

A private family viewing will be held.
