J. Gerald Levey died at home on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the age of 79.
He was born in Dunmore, on April 1, 1933, to the late James and Rita Reirdon Levey. Mr. Levey was a graduate of Dunmore High School, class of 1952, and recently attended his 60th class reunion. He was also a graduate of Seton Hall University, receiving both B.A. and M.B.A. degrees. He spent most of his career as an insurance executive, in positions from financial director and senior vice president at multinational corporations such as AIG and INA (now CIGNA), then president at St. Paul Insurance Company, and finally, president and CEO of Atropos, a Swiss reinsurance company, based in London.
During his career and retirement, Mr. Levey lived in Livingston, N.J.; St. Paul, Minn.; London; Reston, Va., and in the past year, South Bend, Ind. Mr. Levey was a proud veteran, having served in the Army in the 82nd Airborne Division. His interests were traveling, Notre Dame sports, the Boston Red Sox, and above all, his grandchildren.
He is survived by his devoted children, Kathleen Levey of Red Bank, N.J.; Brian Levey and wife, Alison, of South Bend, Ind.; Maureen and husband, Roland Chase, of Livingston, N.J.; and Patti Levey of New York City; his loving grandchildren, Conor Levey, Austin and Owen Chase; his former wife, Rita Seery Levey; siblings, Lorraine Dolan of New Jersey; Sondra Strobel of Florida; and Edward Collins and wife, Susan, of North Carolina.
He was also preceded in death by his brother, James Levey.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame University, with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, located on the campus of Notre Dame.
