George J. Duffy Sr., 72, of West Scranton, died Sunday at home. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Gvasdauskas Duffy. Wed on Aug. 6, 1966, the couple had been married for 46 years.

Born in Scranton on Dec. 20, 1939, son of the late George R. and Rose Lenihan Duffy, George was a graduate of West Scranton High School, class of 1957. In 1958, at the age of 19, he started a wholesale jewelry trade shop by the name of Duffy Jewelers. He worked as a jeweler at Sugerman's throughout the 1960s, and upon leaving Sugerman's in 1968, he began his own retail jewelry business, Duffy Jewelers of downtown Scranton. Until his recent health issues, he had operated the business along with his son, Greg. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church in West Scranton. He also served with the 365th Engineers of the Army Reserves.

An avid golfer who enjoyed spending time with his family, he will be dearly missed.

His family would like to thank both Dr. Michael K. Montella, and the staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their exceptional care throughout George's illness.

He is survived by four sons, Greg Duffy of Scranton; George Duffy Jr. and wife, Kim, of Factoryville; Kevin Duffy of Scranton; and Dan Duffy and wife, Marcy, of Scranton; a brother, Francis Duffy and wife, Loraine, of Cresco; an aunt, Sister Francis Gabriel, I.H.M., of Scranton; seven grandchildren, Connor, Emily, Mackenzie, Kevin, Andrew, George and Samantha Duffy; many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Duffy.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, 1403 Jackson St., Scranton. Those attending are asked to go directly to the church.

Relatives and friends may pay their respects today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Kearney Funeral Home Inc., 125 N. Main Ave., Scranton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the , as he was a seven-year lung cancer survivor, at 712 S. Keyser Ave., Taylor, PA 18517, or to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Suite 7, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701.
