Ruth D. Lowndes, 96, of Scranton, died Friday morning in Green Ridge Health Care Center following an illness. She is the widow of Earle S. Lowndes, who died in 1979.

Born March 29, 1916, in Dunmore, she was the daughter of the late Walter J. and Myrtle Green Devereaux. She was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and the Powell School of Business. She also attended Keystone Junior College. She was previously employed by Aetna Insurance Co. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Scranton, and a former member of the Century Club of Scranton.
Surviving are two daughters, Roberta D. Kennedy-Kryvor and husband, Peter, of Dunmore; and Suzanne L. Chimel and husband, Robert, of Clarks Summit; one son, Jeffrey S. Lowndes of Scranton; three grandchildren, Jason Kennedy, Steven and William Chimel.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Raymond and John Devereaux.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home, 1810 Sanderson Ave., Scranton, with the Rev. Arthur W. Davis as officiating clergy. Interment, Dunmore Cemetery.
