Helen had been a resident of St. Mary's Villa in Elmhurst since March 2011. Born in Throop, daughter of the late Michael and Ann Gombar-Zurko, Helen was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Parish at St. Anthony's Church, Throop. She was graduate of Throop High School. Helen's passion in life was baking and cooking, and creating delicious meals for her family and friends, which became her profession. She later opened her own bakery in Dickson City, Helen's Pastry Shoppe. However, for more than 30 years, Helen wrote the food column "From Helen's Kitchen," which appeared in the Valley AdVantage, Pocono Shopper, Triboro Banner, NYPennySaver and several other local newspapers. Her wish was for the column to be continued by her daughter.
Helen's beloved husband of 56 years, Albert, passed away in January 21, 2012. She is survived by a daughter, Lori Kishel, Jefferson Township; nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by sisters, Margaret Pagnutti, Wilma Miklus, Ceil Burke and Sister Mary Vincent, O.P. Dominican Order; and brothers, Paul, Edward, George and Michael Zurko.
Helen was truly a wonderful woman and a friend to everyone. She had a beautiful, engaging smile that will be missed by all, especially by her daughter, Lori. Helen was a loving and caring wife and mother. In addition to her recipe collection, she enjoyed music and dancing, and while at St. Mary's Villa, loved to participate in the Music Group with her close friends, Clara and Helen. The loss of our Helen will be felt for years to come, as she touched the lives of many through her work, and family and friends alike.
Helen's daughter would like to thank the nurses and staff of St. Mary's Villa, especially Unit 31, and the care provided by Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
The funeral will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from the John F. Glinsky Funeral Home, 445 Sanderson St., Throop, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church, Throop. Interment, St. John's Cemetery, Throop.
