Shirley Anne Peifer, 74, of Greentown, died Thursday in Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton. She was the wife of Donald R. Peifer Sr.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, daughter of the late Donald and Delavinia Freeman Loomis, she had resided in the Greentown area for the past 60 years. Shirley was of the Methodist faith. She was very active with the Greene Dreher Volunteer Fire Company, serving in the radio room and organizing and directing many of the benefit activities for the company, both in the fire house and at the annual picnic.
Shirley was a devoted grandmother. She enjoyed feeding the birds and wildlife at her Greentown home and loved to travel the East Coast.
She is also survived by two sons, Donald R. Peifer Jr., Conway, S.C.; and Randy E. Peifer and wife, Cheryl, Lake Ariel; a son-in-law, Robert Deschenes, New York; five grandchildren, Eric Peifer, Abby Peifer, Hannah Peifer, Matthew Deschenes and Kayden Snyder; stepmother, Juanita Loomis, Florida; and stepbrother, Jeff Head, Greentown.
She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Laura Peifer Deschenes, in 2010; sisters, Betty Shiffler, Dorothy Schafer, Patricia Elders and Nancy Alecka; stepsister, Donna Loomis; and stepbrother, Wilbur Head.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 6 p.m. in the Greene Dreher Fire House; the Rev. Nathan R. Gilpin will officiate. Friends may gather Monday from 5 to 6 at the fire house.
