Joseph C. Karolewicz, 78, a lifelong resident of Throop, died Thursday evening in the Hospice Unit at Regional Hospital of Scranton. His wife of 56 years is the former Josephine Roman of Throop.

Born in Throop, son of the late John and Anna Dembrowski Karolewicz, he was a graduate of Throop High School. Before retirement, he was employed for more than 10 years as a security guard at the University of Scranton. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish at St. Anthony's Church in Throop, and was past president of the Holy Name Society, serving almost 35 years. Earlier in his life, he worked as a cutter in the local garment industry, and more recently, he served as parish custodian for more than 15 years.

He enjoyed taking trips with his wife, sitting on his porch with a draft beer and listening to polkas.

The family would like to thank the 8th-floor staff at Regional Hospital and the nurses of the 3rd-floor hospice unit for their wonderful care.

He is also survived by two daughters, Marie and Diane, both of Throop; a son, David, Throop; a niece, Carol Kasarda, Tampa Bay, Fla.; and a great-nephew, Edward Dutka, Scranton. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Florence Kasarda; and a brother, Edward Karolewicz.

The funeral will be Monday at 9 a.m. from the John J. Turko & Sons Funeral Home, 402 Boulevard Ave., Dickson City, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in Blessed Sacrament Parish at St. Anthony's Church, Rebecca Street, Throop, to be celebrated by Monsignor Michael J. Delaney, pastor. Interment, parish cemetery, Dickson City.
