Francis J. Vanston, 90, of West Scranton, died early Sunday morning in the Commonwealth Inpatient Hospice Unit at the Regional Hospital of Scranton after a brief illness. His wife is the former Madelyn Sine. The couple would have been married 66 years on June 14.

Born 1923 in Scranton, he was the son of the late William and Mary Gurrell Vanston. He graduated from St. Patrick's High School. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, West Scranton. Before retirement, he had been employed by the Scranton Fire Department for 36 years, earning the rank of captain. He was a World War II United States Army veteran.
Also surviving are daughters, Barbara Vanston of Scranton; Madelyn Kvidahl and husband, Glenn, of Mesa, Ariz.; Teresa Iacobacci and husband, Donald, of Longs, S.C.; and Mary Lance and husband, William, of Moscow; grandchildren, David and Jason Kvidahl; Michele and Christine Kiselosky; and Kathryn Routledge; Bryan and Maura Lance; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by sisters, Irene Vanston and Marie Schmidt; and brothers Martin, Edward and William Vanston.
Funeral services will be private with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, Oram Street, West Scranton. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
