William David Hnatew, 62, of West Scranton, died Thursday at home.

Born in Scranton, son of the late William and Helen Stanford Hnatew, David was a graduate of West Scranton High School, class of 1969, and Penn State University, receiving a B.S. in political science. He worked in the city planning office in the late 1970s and also at Clarks Summit State Hospital until he retired.

David was a great baseball player and an Eagle Scout in his youth. He was ever vigilant in caring for our environment. He loved nature, camping, hiking, reading, music, traveling, baseball and Russian history. He will always be remembered for his integrity, kindness, generosity and devotion to his family. His example touched everyone and we will be forever grateful. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Surviving are his devoted children, Paul Ware, and Tasha and Maura Hnatew, all of Scranton; his former wife, Sharon Ware; seven grandchildren, Kate, Maggie, Mary and Michael Ware; Geno and Gianni Salmond; and Marianna Schmidt; two nieces, Kristin and Jillian Baun; nephew, Cary Kingdom; great-nieces and great-nephews, Jeffrey, Emmi and Paige.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Beverly Hnatew Baun.

Memorial Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 9 a.m. in St. Michael's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 540 N. Main Ave., Scranton, by the Very Rev. Nestor Kowal, pastor. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, David's family requests memorial contributions be made to the Huntington's Society, 505 Eighth Ave., Suite 902, New York, NY 10018.
