Joseph J. Swider, 91, of Scranton and formerly of South Plainfield, N.J., died Thursday morning at Regional Hospital of Scranton after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Galliano Swider, on Aug. 8, 1993.

Born May 4, 1922, in Newark, N.J., son of the late Peter and Mary Swider, Joseph was an Army veteran in the Pacific, serving during World War II. He obtained the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and a Bronze Star, and was serving in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on Hawaii. Before his retirement, he was self-employed as a general contractor in New Jersey. He was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor's Association and was of the Roman Catholic faith. Joseph had a great love for his adopted city of Scranton.

Joseph's family would like to express their thanks to all of his health care professionals, especially Dr. Ferdinand Manahan.

Surviving are two sons, Joseph A. Swider and companion, Linda Barto, Bridgewater, N.J.; and Michael J. Swider and wife, Elizabeth, Milford; and two beloved grandsons, James Swider and Luke Swider.

He was also preceded in death by his sister, Estelle Swider; and his brother, Edward Swider.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. in Fairview Memorial Park, 111 Route 435, Elmhurst Twp., with the Rev. Robert J. Simon as officiating clergy. Military honors will be rendered following the graveside service.
