Leonard Newkirk, 86, Scott Twp., formerly of Throop, died Saturday at Hospice at Regional Hospital of Scranton. He and his wife, the former Elizabeth Naugin of Throop, would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on July 31.

Born Feb. 23, 1927, in Dickson City, he was the son of the late Harvey and Florence Barrett Newkirk. He attended Dickson City schools, after which he joined the Navy and fought in World War II in Okinawa. After his service, he worked as manager of Canada Dry Bottling Co. until retirement.
Len was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved traveling, NASCAR, football and just being with his family.
He is also survived by his daughters, Florence Kashetta and husband, Jim, Scott Twp.; and Mary Beth Beppler and husband, Gary, Throop; grandchildren, Amy McLaughlin and husband, Ian, Glenmoore; Jamie Kashetta, Washington, D.C.; Gary Beppler and companion Jennifer Coleman, Throop; and Greg Beppler, Throop; and great-granddaughter, Anna McLaughlin.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family by the Rev. Arthur W. Davis. Burial, Abington Hills Cemetery, Morgan Highway, South Abington Twp.
