Donald E. Shoener, 84, of Carbondale, died Tuesday night at home. He was the husband of the former Mary Vergari. They were married on Oct. 1, 1978.

Born April 30, 1929, in Scranton, son of the late Vernon and Greta Davis Shoener, he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Mid Valley DAV Post 11 in Dickson City. Before retirement, he had been employed as a typesetter for many years at Haddon Craftsmen in Scranton and Smith-Bennett Printing in Wilkes-Barre.

He is also survived by a daughter, Kathy Tansits and husband, Kenneth, Scranton; a stepson, Mark Evans, Carbondale; a granddaughter, Courtney Tansits, Scranton; a sister, Barbara Bzdick and husband, John, Jessup; two brothers, Darwin Shoener and wife, Jane; and Thomas Shoener and wife, Bernice, all of Scranton; numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Carmine J. & Louis C. Parise Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., Farview and 41st streets, Carbondale, with his son-in-law, the Rev. Kenneth Tansits, officiating. Interment with military honors, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.
