Madlyn J. Gastinger, 90, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Wednesday at Allied Skilled Nursing Center. She was the wife of Robert Gastinger, who died Jan. 19, 2005. They were married for 57 years.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Peter and Justina Klein Dowdell, Madlyn graduated from St. Mary's High School and worked as a telephone supervisor for Bell Telephone, at the switchboard at Community Medical Center and retired as a dispatcher for the state police in Dunmore. She was a member of the former St. Mary of the Assumption Church and its After 50 Club.

Surviving are two daughters, Janice Gastinger, Scranton; and Tina Shimo and husband, James, both of Scranton; two sons, Robert Gastinger and wife, Kathy, Charlestown, W.Va.; and Michael Gastinger and fiancée, Daria Meloni, Jermyn; a daughter in law, Ann Gastinger, Bethlehem; a sister, Joan Morgan, Scranton; a brother, Joseph Dowdell, Scranton; grandchildren, Bill, Matt, Genie, Molly, Amy, Jess, Caron and Mary; great-grandchildren, Kym, Veronica, Maddie, Austin, Avery, Greyson, Reid, Bronson and Jackson; several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Joseph W. Gastinger, M.D.; a sister, Mary Dowdell; and brothers, Francis, Paul and John Dowdell.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Allied Skilled Nursing Center 3 North for the care and compassion shown to Madlyn during her stay.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Parish of St. John Neumann, Nativity of Our Lord Church, 633 Orchard St., Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Michael Bryant, pastor. Interment will be private.
