Robert "Bob" Grant Turano Sr., 89, of Honesdale, died Thursday at home after an illness. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jean E. Polley Turano.

Robert was born in Carbondale, son and last surviving member of the Thomas T. and Mary T. Cost Turano family. He graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School, Carbondale, and received his BS from the University of Scranton and MS from New York University. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European theater in the medical corps. He was an officer of Torch Lumber Mill, managing the furniture frame business. Bob was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church. While serving as president of the Honesdale Catholic PTA, he started the well known parish block party. He was co-partner of the Fairlane Bowlodrome and a member and past director of the Honesdale Country Club.

He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.

His family would like to thank all of the compassionate caregivers, home health and hospice for their loving care.

Surviving are five children, Mary Hamilton and husband, Bob, Montgomery Village, Md.; Robert Turano and wife, Anne, Honesdale; Irene Lagler and husband, Jeffrey, Montgomery Village; Randall Turano and wife, Catherine, Stroudsburg; and Nancy Propst and husband, Michael, Honesdale; 15 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Rosella Torch, Theresa, Mildred Robbins and Irene Grandinetti; three brothers, Albert, Thomas and William; and a grandson, Christopher Turano.

As per his request, cremation will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Magdalen Church, Honesdale. Interment with full military honors will be in Indian Orchard Cemetery.

Friends may call Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hessling Funeral Home Inc., 428 Main St., Honesdale.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harry D. Propst, M.D., Family Fund or the Wayne Memorial Cardiac Rehabilitation Dept., both at 601 Park St., Honesdale, PA 18431.
