Mildred Smichowski Chislo, 88, of Dupont, died Thursday at home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry "Eddie" Chislo.

Born July 15, 1925, in Dupont, daughter of the late Joseph and Cassie Lokuta Smichowski, Mildred was a member of Sacred Heart Of Jesus Church. She attended Dupont Schools and also King's County Hospital school of Nursing, Brooklyn, N.Y. Before retirement as a registered nurse, she worked at the Taylor Hospital and for 25 years at the VA Medical Center, Plains Twp.
She loved being a nurse and loved telling stories about the way things used to be. She also enjoyed gardening and loved to read. But most of all she loved her family and will be dearly missed by all.
Mildred's family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. Linda Frantz and her nurses from Traditional Home Health and Hospice of Dunmore for their kind and compassionate care.
Surviving are three daughters, Marsha and husband, Joseph Lakowski, Suscon; Christine Chislo, Suscon; and Beverly and husband, Steve Solfanelli, Dalton; seven grandchildren, Joe Giambra, Bryan Giambra, Beckie Kobi, Nick Marco, Greg Solfanelli, Christa DeSiderato and Matt Solfanelli; 15 great-grandchildren; her brother, Vince Smichowski, Mansfield; several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Of Jesus Church, 215 Lackawanna Ave., Dupont, by the Rev. Joseph Verespy. Family and friends are asked to go directly to church for Mass; there will be no procession from the funeral home to the church.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea.
