Sophie "Sue" Begey, 96, formerly of Dickson City, died Thursday evening at the VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Begey, on Aug. 5, 1975.

Born in Dickson City on Dec. 16, 1917, daughter of the late Frank and Anna Patalita Srebro, she was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Visitation Church, Dickson City. She was a graduate of St. Mary's Parochial School, class of 1932, and Dickson City High School, class of 1936. Before retirement, she was employed by the A&P store.

She was a former member of the Orchard Lake Auxiliary, and a past member of the St. Theresa's Society and Christian Mother's Society at St. Mary's Visitation Church.

Gram was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandma and aunt. She was a good and generous person, who enjoyed preparing and sharing traditional Polish meals with her family, especially on holidays. She had a great devotion to the Divine Mercy of Jesus. Gram is now happy in heaven, reunited with her husband, Mike, daughter, Arlene, granddaughter, Linda, and other family members and friends who awaited her.

Surviving are a daughter, Fran Zaleski and husband, Don, Scott Twp.; grandchildren, Joseph Shea and wife, Suzi, Glenburn; Michael Shea and wife, Laura, Colorado; Edward Shea and wife, Julia, Virginia; Dawn Zaleski Melodia and husband, Joe, Blakely; Donald Zaleski, Blakely; and Brian Lowell, Maryland; great-grandchildren, Cassie and Christie Lowell and Samantha, Nadia, Alex and Ana Shea; brother, Henry Srebro and wife, Lorraine, Dickson City; sister-in-law, Pearl Srebro, North Carolina; Jack and Nancy Hiddlestone, whom she considered family; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Arlene Shea; son-in-law, Joseph Shea; brothers, Frank, Peter and Joseph Srebro; granddaughter, Linda Lowell; and nephew and godson, Richard Srebro.

The funeral will be Monday at 9 a.m. from the Frank T. Mazur Funeral Home Inc., 601 Dundaff St., Dickson City, with Mass at 9:30 at St. Mary's Visitation Church, Dickson City. Interment, St. Mary's Cemetery, Dickson City.

Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.
