Dorothy Berardis, 88, of Westlake Village, Calif., died Jan. 25 at home after a brief illness. She was the widow of Dr. Velio E. Berardis of Scranton.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Walter and Stella Ludwikowski, she was educated in Scranton and graduated as a registered nurse from Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing in Scranton.
She raised her son, John, and nephews, Mark and Eric Ludwikowski, in Scranton. Dorothy moved to Marina del Rey, Calif., in 1992. There, she volunteered at nearby Santa Monica Hospital. In 1999, she moved to Westlake Village to be near her son and grandson.
Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, aunt and grandmother. She touched many people in her life, and loved her many nieces and nephews. She made cherished friends worldwide through her fan association with Greek tenor Mario Frangoulis. During her life, she became an avid tennis player and pianist. Dorothy enjoyed oil and watercolor painting.
Surviving are a brother, Edward Ludwikowski, Scranton; a son, Dr. John Berardis; a grandson, Nicholas Berardis, Westlake Village; nephews, Mark Ludwikowski, Scranton; and Eric Ludwikowski, Clarksville, Tenn.; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Bernard; and a sister, Mary.
A blessing service will be Feb. 14, at 12:30 p.m. at Cathedral Cemetery Chapel, 1708 Oram St., Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Scott Sterowski, pastor of St. Paul of the Cross Parish. Arrangements are entrusted to Brian Arthur Strauch Funeral Homes and Cremation Services, 602 Birch St., Scranton, PA 18505.
Memorial donations will be accepted by the University of Scranton for the Velio E. Berardis, M.D. '45 Memorial Scholarship, University of Scranton, P.O. Box 1385, Scranton, PA 18501-9903.
