Ruth J. Brittain, 79, of Clarks Summit, formerly of Beach Lake, died Thursday night at home. Her husband is James Brittain Sr. The couple married on June 2, 1962.

Born in Honesdale and raised in Beach Lake, daughter of the late Alfred and Doris Winnie Crosby, she moved to the Clarks Summit area in 1953 with her dear friends, the late Adeline Cobb and her daughter, Linda Weeks Young of Clarks Summit. After graduating from Madame Fenwick School of Beauty, she worked alongside Adeline at the Powder Puff Beauty Salon in Clarks Summit. She was a longtime member of the Church of Epiphany in Glenburn and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Clarks Summit Fire Company. For many years, Ruth was the Clarks Summit tax collector, as well as the judge of elections.

Ruth and Jim enjoyed summers with their children and friends at Lake Carey, and had a favorite pastime of dancing on Saturday nights.

Also surviving are a son, James Jr. and wife, Kairon, Royersford; three daughters, Nancy Brittain Jenkins, Tunkhannock; Linda Brittain Floyd, Bel Air, Md.; and Kathy Brittain and partner, Dianna Dean, Falls; nine grandchildren, James III, Kristi, Sabrina and Cassandra Brittain, Elizabeth and Robert Jenkins, Jacqueline and Bradley Floyd and James Brittain Dean; two brothers, Alfred Crosby Jr. and wife, Jeanne, Gettysburg; and Robert Crosby and wife, Cathy, Webster, N.Y.; a sister, Betty Ann and husband, Mike Benio, Honesdale; and a niece, Judy Belch.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Joan Owens, Clarks Summit.

The funeral will be Tuesday at noon from the Lawrence E. Young Funeral Home, 418 S. State St., Clarks Summit, with services by Father Graham Cliff, interim priest at Church of Epiphany. Interment will be at Clarks Green Cemetery.

Friends may call Tuesday from 11 until the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clarks Summit Fire Company, 321 Bedford St., Clarks Summit, PA 18411; or to the donor's favorite charity.
