Mary Podunajec Wittig, 89, of Waymart, died Sunday at Allied Services Long Term Care Facility in Scranton. She was married for 53 years to Gerald Bryant Wittig, who died in 2001.

Born July 29, 1924, in Christopher, Ill., daughter of the late Peter and Theresa Virthprah Podunajec, she was raised in Simpson and Canaan Twp. Before her marriage, she worked in Norristown and at the Waymart Knitwear.
On May 9, 1948, she married her childhood sweetheart and she and Gerald made their home in Canaan Twp., where they raised three daughters. A devoted wife, mother and homemaker, Mary dedicated her life to her family. She was always home when her daughters got off the school bus and prepared thousands of family meals from food raised on the Wittig property. Mary valued education. Unable to complete high school during the Great Depression, Mary attended classes in 1974 to receive her GED through Western Wayne School District. She strongly encouraged and assisted her daughters in furthering their educations.
Mary loved reading, music, cooking and baking. She was a collector of cookbooks and enjoyed cooking shows and sharing recipes.
She was a longtime member of Waymart Calvary United Methodist Church, where she contributed to many church dinners and bake sales.
Surviving are three daughters, Donna LaBar and husband, Jim; Deborah Poltanis and husband, John, all of Waymart; and Diane Wittig Musser and husband, Bob, Milton; four brothers, Peter and Paul Podunajec, Waymart; and Joe and James Podunajec, Prompton; two sisters, Gloria Gebert, Waymart; and Barbara Jezercak, Prompton; many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Roe; and three brothers, Steve, George and Eddie Podunajec.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Jenkins Funeral Home, 269 Belmont St., Waymart, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Joanne Weiss, a close friend of the family. Interment will be at Canaan Corners Cemetery.
Friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Waymart Calvary United Methodist Church, P.O. Box J, Waymart, PA 18472.
