Elaine Utan, born on February 2, 1930, died after a noble struggle with pancreatic cancer on March 5, 2014. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Attorney Edwin Utan; sons, Charles, of Washington, D.C., and Adam, of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Natalie Rose, Nicholas and Nathan; a sister, Velma Felder; and brother, Yale Shanfeld.

A magna cum laude graduate of Marywood University, Elaine was an active community leader, serving on numerous boards including Hadassah, the Century Club, Mostly Opera and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic Orchestra.

Elaine had a keen mind and a passion for fine literature, both fiction and poetry. A voracious reader, she was delighted with her membership in book clubs and conversations about the nuances and complexities of the works she read. She served as the head of the literary department of the Century Club, and developed stimulating literary programs in that role.

In the last year of her life, Elaine was surrounded by loving family and friends who did all in their power to prolong her life and make the quality of her life all that it could be. In honor of her love of literature and the knowledge she gained from it about life and death, Elaine would appreciate Shakespeare's wisdom on death from his play, Julius Caesar: "It seems to me most strange that men should fear, seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come." With family close around her, Elaine died fearlessly and peacefully in the VNA Hospice at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton.

The funeral will be Sunday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with a service at 11 a.m. by Rabbi Moshe Saks. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m.

Interment, Dalton Jewish Cemetery, Dalton.

The family will receive friends during shiva on Monday and Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the family residence.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to send contributions to charities of their choice.
