Anna Kowalako, 81, of Browndale, died Thursday at the Forest City Nursing Center. She was the widow of Joseph "Jokey" Kowalako, who died in 2003. They had been married for 43 years at the time of his death.

Born in Forest City in 1932, daughter of the late Michael and Anna Sofko Benarick, Annie graduated from Forest City High School in 1950. She worked at the Simpson Dress Factory for more than 20 years and then for the Gentex Corp. until retirement. Annie was a member of Ascension Parish, Forest City.

Annie, as everyone called her, enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved displaying pictures of them in her home. She enjoyed baking, particularly her "filled horn cookies." Always on the go, whether it was going to church and community functions or shopping, especially for jewelry, she kept busy.

The family would like to offer a "special thank you" to her neighbor, Lillian, who was always there for Annie, and she treated her like a sister. A thank you also goes to Dr. Manahan, Dr. McAndrew, Cottage Hose Company drivers, the staff at DaVita Dialysis Clinic in Childs, the staff of the Forest City Nursing Center and her caregivers within her home. The care and support they gave her over the past years was very much appreciated.

Annie is survived by a brother, Paul Benarick, Venice, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by sisters, Marian Sheptak, Blanche Musho and Eleanor Richards; and five brothers, John, Walter, Dave, Leo and Andrew Benarick.

A blessing service is scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m. at the Joseph W. Scotchlas Funeral Home Inc., 621 Main St., Simpson, by the Rev. Patrick L. Albert, pastor of Ascension Parish. Interment in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Forest City, will be at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kidney Transplant/Dialysis Association, P.O. Box 51362 GMF, Boston, MA 02205-1362. This organization is an all-volunteer nonprofit with all funds going directly to support patients.
