Michael S. Wassel, 69, of Scranton, died Friday at Moses Taylor Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. His wife of 40 years is the former Linda Jeffreys.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Martin Svetlovics and Mary Wassel, he was a 1963 graduate of Scranton Technical High School. Before retirement, he worked at Specialty Records and Chamberlain Ammunition Plant for 33 years. He was a member of the Army National Guard and the International Association of Machinists union.

Michael was a very loving husband, father and grandfather, who was loved by all who knew him. He was his grandson's biggest fan on the baseball diamond. He had great affection for animals and children, and he was known as the "Candy Man," who offered candy everywhere he went. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

He is also survived by two sons, Michael Wassel Jr. and wife, Sue, Plains; and Eric Hueston, West Pittston; a grandson, Michael Anthony Wassel; former wife, Mary Ann Pomichter; two stepdaughters, Michelle and Laura Pomichter; and a stepson, Stephen Pomichter.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Neil W. Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. John Neumann Parish in Nativity of Our Lord Church, 633 Orchard St., Scranton, celebrated by the Rev. Michael Bryant, pastor. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst. The family requests that those attending the funeral proceed directly to the church.

Friends may call Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.
