Joyce Mazzacco, 70, of Archbald, died Saturday morning at Lackawanna Health and Rehab Center. She had been married to her devoted husband and caregiver, Louis R. Mazzacco, for more than 50 years.
The Guest Book is expired.
Born on Powell Avenue in Jessup, daughter of the late Mario and Madeline Larioni Vitaioli, she grew up with the support and companionship of her extended family in an area that Italian immigrants settled, and that was an extension of Italy. She spoke fluent Italian, learned to cook Italian food and understood the rituals of the Italian culture. Particularly close to her as a child was her cousin, Shirley, who survives her.
As she grew older, she attended Jessup schools. After graduation, she was employed temporarily in local manufacturing until she finally became an employee of Acme Markets, where she spent the majority of her working years and from where she retired in 1997.
In 1963, she moved to the Riverside section of Archbald, where she and her husband lived in the house where he grew up. She became an important part of the Mazzacco and Lemoncelli families, and eventually renovated and moved into her mother-in-law's rental house on the same property. Even when she moved to New Jersey for a time because of her husband's schooling, she lived near family members in the Bound Brook area.
Throughout her life, she was the best wife, mother and homemaker anyone could imagine.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the Lackawanna Health and Rehab Center, who was dedicated to caring for her during her years there.
Also surviving are two daughters, Stacey Mazzacco, M.D., Lancaster; and Rebecca Mazzacco, BSME, Stem, N.C.
She was also preceded in death by her husband's parents and a sister-in-law, Julie Mazzacco.
The funeral will be Wednesday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Peckville, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. Interment, St. Francis Cemetery, Eynon. Arrangements are by the James M. Margotta Funeral Home, 1019 Main St., Peckville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research, funded through the Bright Focus Foundation. Information can be obtained at brightfocus.org.
