Robert Douglas Bowden, 81, a resident of Peckville, died Tuesday evening in VNA Hospice at Geisinger Community Medical Center, Scranton, after a courageous two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer. His wife of 60 years is Helen Pavlosky Bowden.

Born July 17, 1932, in Underwood Village, Olyphant, son of the late James and Ethel Burns Bowden, he served in the Navy Reserve and on active duty during the Korean War.
Before retiring, he was employed by the Lackawanna River Basin Sewer Authority. He was a 52-year member of American Legion Post 0624, Eynon.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle, Doug enjoyed spending time with his family more than anything. As a hobby, he built and flew radio-controlled model airplanes, and belonged to various model airplane clubs. He also enjoyed going for rides on his motorcycle.
The family would like to thank Dr. Bria Tinsley and the Hospice of the Sacred Heart staff, especially Jean Sembrot, for their excellent and compassionate care.
Also surviving are two daughters, Pam Bomersbach and husband, Chris, Concord, N.C.; and Barbara Markiw and husband, Kevin, Edmonton, Canada; three grandchildren, Alexa Bomersbach and Amber and Dalton Caldwell; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, James Bowden; and two sisters, Marjorie Snodgrass and Betty Pettigrew.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the First United Presbyterian Church, 1557 Main St., Peckville, with services by the Rev. Virginia Miner, pastor.
Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to the church.
Interment, Valley View Memorial Park, Montdale.
Friends may call Sunday, 5 to 8 p.m., at the Hedley W. Mason Funeral Home, 436 Main St., Peckville.
