Richard J. Mauer, 59, of Williamsburg, Va., formerly of Clarks Summit, died Tuesday after being stricken ill at home.

Born Sept. 5, 1954, in Scranton, son of Paul W. and Kay L. Mauer, Albuquerque, N.M., he was a 1972 graduate of Abington Heights High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree in food service and housing administration from Penn State University. He moved to Williamsburg in 2009. His professional career was as a food service consultant and he was self-employed as owner of the Dunhill Group.

An avid golfer, Rick was a member of Williamsburg National Golf Club, and a former member of Glen Oak Country Club, Waverly. He was a member of professional organizations associated with his profession.

Rick was well-known for his good nature, kindness and deep affection for his dear family and friends. He thoroughly enjoyed Thursday night league and poker games and always looked forward to the camaraderie with his buddies. Rick was always on hand to humor his daughter, Emily, and her friends with whatever crazy idea they had come up with next. He was always entertained by all of Emily's friends growing up but had a sincere fondness for Avalon as if she were his second daughter. His smile lit up a room and his hugs warmed your heart. He was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew him.

Also surviving are a daughter, Emily K. Mauer and her mother, Kathryn Mauer, both of Dickson City; a brother, Steven and wife, Jan, East Brunswick, N.J.; three sisters, Susan Kouri and husband, Dana, Albuquerque; Jill Hogsed and husband, William, Melbourne Beach, Fla.; Jan Winters and husband, John, Albuquerque; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will have a celebration of life in memory of Rick at their convenience. Memorial contributions may be made to a .
