Helen Swartz, 96, a resident of Spring Brook Twp., formerly of Oxon Hill, Md., died Wednesday at her home after a brief illness.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late John and Mary Labanich Swartz, she graduated from Taylor High School, and attended cosmetology school. She and her sister operated Evelyn's Beauty Salon in Washington, D.C., for many years. She was a member of St. Gregory's Byzantine Catholic Church, in the Washington D.C., area, and a member of St. John's Byzantine Catholic Church, Scranton.
She is survived by a sister, Evelyn Swartz, Spring Brook Twp.; a niece, Evelyn Yevitz and husband, Francis, Spring Brook Twp.; three nephews, John Sanko and wife, Connie, Moscow; Stephen Swartz and wife, Joanne, Florida; and Michael Swartz and wife, Laura, Dagsboro, Del.; a grandnephew and caregiver, Chris Yevitz, Spring Brook Twp; and several grandnieces, grandnephews and great-grandnephews.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Anna Sanko; three brothers, Jack, Stephen and Martin; and an infant sister, Maria.
An Office of Christian Burial with Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Byzantine Catholic Church, Fourth Avenue and Broadway Street, Scranton, by the Rev. Leonard A. Martin, S.J., pastor. Interment, St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow. Arrangements are by the Chipak Funeral Home, Scranton.
