Eugene Matkosky, 87, a resident of Holy Family Residence in Scranton, formerly of Dickson City, died Thursday evening at Holy Family Residence following an illness. His wife, the former Mary Monica Grant, died in 2006.

Born in Olyphant, son of the late Anthony (Thomas) and Julia Komarnitsky Matkosky, he was a graduate of Olyphant High School, class of 1944, and a member of SS. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Olyphant. He was employed for many years with the Peoples Life Insurance Co. before his retirement.

Eugene was a man of very strong faith and a member of the Legion of Mary at Holy Family Residence. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. He was a semi-pro bowler in the 1950s with Preno's Bowling Team, loved playing bingo at Holy Family Residence and was an avid New York Yankees fan.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary Beth Kime and husband, Matthew, Dickson City; a son, Thomas W. Matkosky and wife, Cathy, Scott Twp.; two grandsons, Adam Eugene Kime and fiancée, Patricia Kromer, Hanover Twp.; and Alex William Kime and companion, Mikaela Ratay, Olyphant; a twin sister, Joanne Michlowski, Dickson City; a brother, Thomas Matkosky and wife, Ann, Peckville; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Michael and John Matkosky; and three sisters, Catherine Sereditch, Anne Goldyn and Mary Matkosky.

The funeral will be Monday from the Holy Family Residence, with Mass at 10:30 a.m. in the Holy Family Residence Chapel, second floor, to be celebrated by the Rev. E. Francis Kelly, chaplain. Interment, St. Cyril's Cemetery, Peckville. Arrangements are by the John J. Turko & Sons Funeral Home, Olyphant.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 until 9 p.m. in the Maloney Lounge at Holy Family Residence, with Parastas service at 8:30 by the Rev. Nestor Iwasiw.
