Ralph Hughes, 87, Scranton, died Saturday at Geisinger Community Medical Center. He was the widow of Arlene Kelly Hughes.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Arthur and Bertha Bradbury Hughes, he was educated in Scranton public schools. Before retirement, he was employed by the PA Gas & Water Company as a pipe fitter. Ralph was a Navy veteran, having served in World War II. He was an active member and past master of the Hyde Park Lodge 339 F&AM, where he was a recipient of the M.S.A, and was also a member of the Keystone Consistory, the Irem Shrine and the Scranton Shrine Club. He enjoyed polka dancing at local VFWs, and was a fixture at the Glider Diner for nightly dinner.
Surviving are a son, Carl E. Hughes Sr., Mayfield; a grandson, Christopher Hughes; a sister-in-law, Beverly Hoeffner and husband, Frank; nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Blair R. Hughes; a grandson, Carl E. Hughes Jr.; and three brothers, Carl, Robert and Arthur Hughes.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. from the Davies & Jones Funeral Chapel, 135 S. Main Ave., Scranton. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
