Russell C. Benke, 88, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Tuesday morning at Allied Skilled Nursing Center. He was the widower of the former Marie A. Switala, who died June 22, 1996.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Christe and Esther McGavin Benke, he attended Scranton public schools and was a member of the Junior Mechanics. He worked for the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. for 25 years and retired from Poly Hi Solidur Plastics.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Morgan and her husband, James H., Scranton; three sons, John Benke; and Russell Benke Jr. and his wife, Jennifer, both of Scranton; and Carl Benke and his wife, Marietta, Harrisburg; five grandchildren, James Morgan, Megan, Jessica, Russell III and Jason Benke; two great-grandchildren, Niko and Stella Benke; a sister, Arlene Finan and her husband, Joseph, Clarks Summit; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas J. Benke; two sisters, Loretta Gilroy and Joan Kudajewski; and three brothers, Clarence, Harold and Gerald Benke.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton, by his brother-in-law, the Rev. Joseph Finan. Interment will follow in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
