Richard Evans, lifelong resident of West Scranton, passed away Saturday night in the Commonwealth Hospice Inpatient Unit at the Regional Hospital of Scranton surrounded by his loving children. He was the widower of Rose Cawley.

Born in Scranton in 1937, he was the son of the late Willard and Mae Evans Evans. He was a graduate of West Scranton High School, and was a member of the Embury United Methodist Church. During his career, he was employed for more than 30 years in the trucking industry while retiring in 1999 from Yellow Motor Freight as a dispatcher. Rich was a member of the Teamsters Local 229, and also was a PIAA Football official for more than 30 years. He was one of the founding members of the West Scranton High School Football Boosters in the 1960s.
Rich loved his family, especially his grandchildren and never missed their sporting events. He was an avid Penn State fan, and loved football and officiating.
Surviving are a son, Richard Evans, Plantation, Fla.; daughters, Kathy DeSandis and her husband, Robert, Clarks Summit; Karen Lotz and her husband, Joseph; and Laurie Kucharski, all of Scranton; grandchildren, Ashley and Sierra DeSandis, Richard and Frank Kucharski, Austin, Kiley and Ian Lotz and William and Matthew Evans; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by a brother, the Rev. Wesley Evans.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Vanston and James Funeral Home, 1401 Ash St., Scranton, with services by his nephew, the Rev. Jeff Evans. Interment, Abington Hills Cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
