James A. Burns, 78, Carbondale, died Wednesday at Geisinger Community Medical Center. His wife is the former Rose Ann Tolerico.

Born in Susquehanna, son of the late Agnes Burns, he worked for many years as a machinist at General Dynamics.
He enjoyed gardening and going out to dinner, and was an avid hunter and fisherman in his younger days.
Surviving are a daughter, Diana Snyder and husband, Nick, Kingston; two sisters, Rose Plutino, Binghamton, N.Y.; and Agnes Whitehead and husband, Joel, Jackson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by a son, James, in 1989; four brothers, Andrew and John Burns and Michael and Dan Witko; and three sisters, Betty Cucura, Marge Warholic and Irene Hurley.
The funeral will be Monday from the Lawrence A. Gabriel Funeral Home, 74 N. Main St., Carbondale, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. Interment, Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill.
Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.
