Franklin D. Slater of West Scranton died Friday night at Geisinger Community Medical Center. His wife of 57 years is the former Connie Lou Markiewicz.

Born in Scranton in 1933, son of the late Franklin and Frances Kenner Slater, he was a graduate of West Scranton High School, Lackawanna Business College and Johnson Bible School. As a devoted member of the Jackson Street Baptist Church, he served as an usher, Sunday school teacher, deacon, missionary committee member and the BYF adviser. During his career, he was employed by Scranton Plastics/Poly-Hi/Menasha for more than 40 years and Jackson Hewitt tax service, Dunmore, for 15 years.
Franklin loved his family, church, church family and prayer partners. He was a die-hard West Scranton football and Boston Red Sox fan, and also enjoyed gardening and joking around.
Also surviving are a daughter, Sandra Carter and partner, Timothy Vancosky, Scranton; a sister, Marlene Evans, South Abington Twp.; a brother, Robert Slater, Scranton; a foster child, John Woloscyn; a son-in-law, James Carter, Dunmore; grandchildren, Adrianna Carey and husband, Adams Berzins; Nathan David Slater-Carter, Mericia Mills and John Woloscyn and wife, Susan; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by infant sons, Franklin David Slater and David Louis Slater; a daughter, Mindy Lou Slater; brothers, Russell, Kenneth, Raymond and John Slater; and sisters, Dorothy Monahan and Shirley Rabecs.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Jackson Street Baptist Church, 1206 Jackson St., Scranton, by the Rev. Michael Sunseri. Anyone planning on attending the funeral service is asked to go directly to the church. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Vanston and James Funeral Home, 1401 Ash St., Scranton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Deacons Fund or Missionary Fund of Jackson Street Baptist Church, 1206 Jackson St., Scranton, PA 18504.
