Helen Kowanick Barrett, West Scranton, died Tuesday evening at Regional Hospital of Scranton. Her husband of 34 years, Patrick Barrett, died in April of 1980.

Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Demko and Tessie Vikaryk Kowanick, she was educated in Scranton schools and was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, where she was a proud member of the National Honor Society. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, West Scranton.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She was a very active member in her former parish, St. John the Baptist of West Scranton. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Surviving are three sons, Joseph and wife, Karen, Scranton; Patrick, Williamsport; and Michael and wife, Nancy, Clarks Green; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a brother, Harry Kowanick and wife, Estelle, Scranton; two sisters, Kate Lavell, Alaska; and Stephanie Badner, Scranton; nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Peter, Walter and John; and two sisters, Anna Lukasavage and Mary Nardelli.
The funeral will be Saturday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Holy Family Residence, 2500 Adams Ave., Scranton. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
Friends may call Friday, 4 to 7 p.m., at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor at Holy Family Residence, 2500 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509.
