Sarah Azzeroni Maira, 84, a lifelong Old Forge resident, died Monday in Moses Taylor Hospital, Scranton. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Charles "Chi-Chi" Maira.

Born in Old Forge, daughter of the late Louis and Mary Castriotta Azzeroni, she was a 1949 graduate of Old Forge High School. Sarah was employed in the area garment industry before retirement, and held membership in the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union. She also worked at Arcaro & Genell's Restaurant for several years. She was a parishioner of St. Lawrence O'Toole Church at Prince of Peace Parish, Old Forge.

The traditional Christmas Eve dinner was always celebrated at her house. Also, Fourth of July parties were always in her yard. She was a great seamstress. Sarah was known as Aunt Mary to many, and was very family oriented. She loved nothing more than to be around her family. A wonderful cook, she would make many of her family's favorite dishes any time they requested them.

A special thank you is extended to all of the nurses on the fourth floor of Moses Taylor Hospital for their kindness and compassion during Sarah's stay.

Also surviving are a son, Charles Maira Jr. and wife, Maria; two sisters, Jean LaSorsa and Margaret "Maggie" Smicherko, all of Old Forge; two stepgrandchildren, Kerri Fox (Andrew) and Jim Fox (Ashley); nieces and nephews, including Ann Kania and husband, Bob; and Maryann Shumbres and husband, Stephen, all of Old Forge; grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Bill Azzeroni.

The funeral will be Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the Victor M. Ferri Funeral Home, Robert J. Gillette, funeral director, 522 Fallon St., Old Forge, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Lawrence O'Toole Church at Prince of Peace Parish, 620 S.
