Lillian Cottone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 16 to Aug. 17, 2014.

Lillian T. Cottone, 96, died peacefully on Aug. 14, 2014, at Holy Family Residence, Scranton, where she had been a resident the past two years.

Born in Scranton on Oct. 6, 1917, to the late Salvatore and Antonina Colletti Cottone, "Lil" was the seventh of 10 children. She was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, class of 1935. She received her Bachelor of Science from Marywood College in 1941 and her master's degree in education from Northwestern University. Lil also proudly served her country in the United States Navy as a WAVE from 1943 to 1945 during World War II.

After her service in the Navy, Lil began a 28-year career in education from 1948 to 1976 at Dover High School, Dover, Del. On the occasion of her retirement, she was recognized for her service to that school as a "Teacher, Principal and Friend." Lil was always fondly remembered by her students and colleagues in Delaware, even until the time of her passing.

Lil returned to Scranton in 1976 to be with her large and loving family. Her home was always welcoming to those near and far. She served her community in the Altruisa Club of Scranton and the Board of Education of St. Paul's School. She was a member of the St. Paul's Altar and Rosary Society and an honorary member of the St. Lucy's Parish Altar and Rosary Society, where her brother, Fr. Paul Cottone, served as pastor for many years. A devout Catholic, Lil was a proud member of St. Paul's Parish in Scranton.

Surviving are two brothers, Judge S. John Cottone and his wife, Joan, Dunmore; and Salvatore B. Cottone, Scranton; a brother-in-law, Anthony DeFilippis, Millington, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lil was also preceded in death by four brothers, Dr. Benjamin J. Cottone, Dr. Peter P. Cottone, Joseph V. Cottone and the Rev. Paul P. Cottone; and three sisters, Mary Cottone Noto, Janet A. Cottone and Ida Cottone DeFilippis.

The family wishes to express its deep gratitude to the Little Sisters of the Poor and to all the compassionate and dedicated caregivers at Holy Family Residence. Also a special thank you goes out to her numerous caregivers during her time at home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Residence. Friends may call at the Maloney Lounge at Holy Family Residence, 2500 Adams Ave., Scranton, Pa., today from 2 to 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Little Sisters of the Poor, Holy Family Residence, 2500 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509 or to St. Paul's Parish, 1510 Penn Ave., Scranton, PA 18509.

Miss Cottone was loved and feared ... and HIGHLY respected ... by the kids at Dover (DE) High. She was a class unto herself and a definite force of nature. RIP, Diamond Lil! You will always be remembered!
