Sam J. Malia, 68, of Dunmore, died Sunday in Moses Taylor Hospital. He and his wife, the former Ingrid Kreiner, celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary July 28.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Andrew and Columba Magilo Malia. He was a graduate of Dunmore High School and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Dunmore. He served in the Army and before retirement was employed by RCA/Thomson Electronics, Dunmore, for 34 years, serving as a union official with the IUE of the AFL-CIO for 30 years as president, vice president, secretary and chief steward. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend known for his quick wit and dry humor.
Also surviving are a son, Sam Malia, Dunmore; a daughter, Diana Montaro and husband, Anthony, Dunmore; three grandchildren, Frank, Maria and Anthony Montaro; two sisters, Mary Rose Malia; and Andrea Malia and companion, Richard Shonk, all of Dunmore; and a niece, Alyssa Shonk.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church, Chestnut Street, Dunmore. Interment in Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
