Chief James J. Klee, 73, former police chief of Scranton, died Monday in Mountain View Care Center after an illness. He and his wife, the former Winifred Durkin, would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in July.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Jacob Klee and the late Mary McGiness Klee Roache, he was a member of St. John Neumann Parish, was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and attended the University of Scranton. He was also a graduate of the State Police Academy, Hershey, and the FBI Academy, Quantico, Va. He served for 43 years in the Scranton Police Department, rising from patrolman to being chief for over a decade. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, was a founding member and former secretary of Northeast Region Antique Auto Club of America and was a founding member of Villa Capri Cruisers. He was a Navy veteran.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed.
Also surviving are two daughters, Kim Rodrigues and husband, Daniel, Dalton; and Kelly Klee Medici, Scranton; a grandson, Justin Medici, Scranton; nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ellen Klee; and his stepfather, Thomas Roche.
The funeral will be Friday at 9 a.m. from the August J. Haas Funeral Home Inc., 202 Pittston Ave., with Mass at 9:30 in Nativity of Our Lord Church, 633 Orchard St., to be celebrated by the Rev. Michael Bryant, pastor. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
