Joseph Emil Kuna, 64, of Philadelphia, formerly of Carbondale, died Saturday, March 24, in Philadelphia from heart failure.

Born in Carbondale, he was the son of the late Emil and Jean Marie McDonough Kuna. He graduated from St. Rose High School in 1965 and was valedictorian. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Scranton and two master's degrees from Marywood University. He went on to earn his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. For the past 30 years, he was employed by the city of Philadelphia in the Department of Human Services.
Surviving are a brother, Paul Kuna, Scranton; a sister, Irene Brzycki and husband, Richard, Scranton; a nephew, Matthew Brzycki and wife, Sara; a niece, Rosemary Zeigler and her children, Kyle and Eric; and several cousins.
The funeral will be Wednesday, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., in St. Rose of Lima Church, Carbondale. Interment will be private in Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery, Finch Hill. Arrangements by the Brennan and Brennan Funeral Home, Inc., 55 Lincoln Ave., Carbondale.
