Joseph A. Matyjevich of Scranton died Thursday in Regional Hospital of Scranton. His wife was Margaret A. McLane Matyjevich, who died April 4, 2006.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Eugene and Elizabeth Slavinski Matyjevich, he was a member of St. Patrick's Church, educated in Scranton Public Schools and a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. An Army veteran, he received the Good Conduct Medal. Before retirement, he was employed by the city of Scranton as a firefighter from 1969 to 1995.

Joe was a loving and devoted husband father and grandfather who will be deeply missed. He was the type of person who would do anything for anyone.

Surviving are one daughter, Jennifer Matyjevich at home; son, Joseph A. Matyjevich Jr. and wife, Laura; granddaughter, Morgan, Scranton; son, Michael Matyjevich and wife, Michelle; granddaughter, Alexandra; and grandson, Zack Matyjevich all of Spring Brook; son, Peter John Matyjevich and wife, Sandra; and grandson, Gregory, all of Scranton; three brothers, Frank Matyjevich, Dunmore; Thomas Daniels, Dallas; and Edward Matyjevich, Taylor; one sister, Frances Lee, Dunmore; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Eleanor Matyjevich.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, Jackson Street, Scranton. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton. Arrangements by the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1240 St. Ann's. St., Scranton.
