Dr. David J. Steigmeyer, M.D., 87, passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, in Fort Wayne.

Born in Fort Wayne, he worked as a pediatrician with Fort Wayne Pediatrics for 50 years, retiring in 1997. He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1942; and the St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1951. He completed his pediatrics residency at the University of Michigan and along with Dr. E. Wade Adams, founded Fort Wayne Pediatrics. He married Suzanne Voorhees on Thanksgiving Day in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1980 he joined the Indiana Air National Guard and served as Lieutenant Colonel and Chief of Clinical Services retiring in 1986. From 1996 to 1997 he was the president of the Fort Wayne Medical Society and was a former member of the Indiana State Medical Association and the Allen County Medical Association.

He loved spending time with his family and he enjoyed sailing.

Surviving are his loving wife of 54 years, Suzanne J. Steigmeyer of Fort Wayne; sons, Dr. Jim Steigmeyer and wife, Elizabeth, of Fort Wayne; Bob Steigmeyer, CEO of Geisinger-Community Medical Center, and wife, Patti, of Clarks Summit, Pa.; and Tom Steigmeyer and wife, Collette, of Fort Wayne; daughters, Teri and husband, Bryson Braasch, of Fort Wayne; Dr. Martha and husband, Rick Dwenger, of Columbus, Ind.; and Libby and husband, Jason Kuckkan, of Cedarburg, Wis.; sisters, twin, Mary and husband, Kenneth Federspiel, of Fort Wayne; Susan and husband, John Haffner, of Indianapolis; and Carol and husband, Dan Offerle, of Fort Wayne; 18 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Betsy Steigmeyer of Fort Wayne.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clem and Helen A. Steigmeyer; brothers, John and Paul Steigmeyer; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Steigmeyer.

Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 4916 Trier Road, with calling one hour before service. Monsignor John Suelzer officiating. Calling is also 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, at D. O. McComb & Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Road, with a Rosary service at 4:30 p.m. Entombment in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
