Archangelo Joseph "Archie" Acierno, 88, died Tuesday, Oct. 2. Archie is survived by his devoted wife, the former Helen Kolodgie, to whom he was married for 65 years

He was formerly from Pittston but resided in Flourtown and Avalon, N.J. He was born on May 11, 1924, to the late Pasquale and Lena Capone Acierno. He attended West Pittston schools and Drexel University, where he earned a degree in civil engineering and was a star athlete in both football and lacrosse. He became construction engineer for the U.S. Postal Service. He retired as a regional director in charge of constructing and maintaining all the post office buildings in the northeast region of the United States. Archie served his country in World War II in the Navy on the USS Tuscaloosa.

Archie will be missed by all who knew him.

Archie is also survived by five children, Patricia and husband, Roy Hanshaw; Richard and wife, Lorraine; Debra and husband, Ray Yoder; Donna, and Archie. "Pop Pop" is also survived by eight grandchildren, Patricia Denise, Ray, Stephanie, Brian, Richard, P.J., Michael and Brandon; five great-grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as "Poppy;" a sister, Ann Belardi, Scranton; maternal aunt, Genevieve Capone DeLuca; sisters-in-law, Angela Barbera and Dolores Kolodgie; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Gaetano.
