Earl Robert Riefler, 77, of Honesdale and Wangum Falls, died Tuesday at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Born on Feb. 23, 1935, in Honesdale, son of the late Earl H. and Catherine Hoffman Riefler, he was a 1953 graduate of Honesdale Catholic High School. He later attended the University of Scranton, Philadelphia School of Arts and Sciences and became a laboratory technician. He was initially employed at St. Francis Hospital in Port Jervis, N.Y. He later worked at Mulenberg Hospital in New Jersey and would be a guest lecturer at Rutgers University. He last worked for many years at Wayne Memorial Hospital's laboratory until he had a stroke in July 1994. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale, and for 20 years was active in its Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Blue Lodge.

After retiring, he took up baking and gardening as hobbies. Earl was an active outdoorsman, enjoying fishing with flies he tied himself. He enjoyed hunting, until his health forced him to stop several years ago. He hunted at Wangum Falls and took several trips to Idaho in pursuit of elk and black bear.

He is survived by a sister, Rita Gallondorm Garrah and husband, John, Honesdale; and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Marie Gallondorm.

As per his request, cremation was held at Maple Hill at Salem Crematory. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary Magdalen Chruch in Honesdale. Interment, St. Mary's Cemetery. A vigil will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. in church on Monday.
