David George Bennie, 77, of Naples, Fla. and Townsend, Tenn., died Nov. 5 in Naples of complications from heart bypass surgery.

Born in Moosic, son of the late George and Anna Bennie, he was a graduate of Penn State with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering. He worked 40 years as a synthetic fibers development engineer for DuPont, mostly in Wilmington, N.C. Dave was a 50-year member of the Sierra Club. He had a passionate love of nature. He led several national Sierra Club backpacking trips to the Wind River Range of Wyoming and the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina and Tennessee. He liked hiking the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee Forest. In Naples, he enjoyed volunteering at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 31 years, Linda Carpenter Bennie; and stepson, Star Ennis Elton III.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity by the Cove Episcopal Church, Naples, in late January. Memorials may be made to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida or Trinity by the Cove Episcopal Church.
