Ruth Haen, 92, a lifelong resident of South Scranton, died Saturday at Allied Skilled Nursing Center. She was the wife of Gilbert J. Haen, who died in 1988.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, daughter of the late Frank X. and Irene J. Herz Melliand, Ruth graduated from St. Mary's High School. She was employed as a bookkeeper at Herz Bros. Store in South Side and in sales at Lewis & Rief in Scranton. She was a member of St. John Neumann Parish, its Altar and Rosary Society and After 50 Club.
Ruth was a wonderful wife, sister and aunt who enjoyed entertaining her family and friends, especially at the family cabin on Lake Winola and during Christmastime. She liked ceramics, ice skating and was an excellent cook, specializing in German potato salad, rum cake and her famous brownies. Ruth volunteered for the Red Cross, assisting in any way that she could during blood drives.
She is survived by two brothers, Fredrick A. Melliand, Scranton; and Linus J. Melliand, San Jose, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Melliand; many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Brown; and two brothers, Robert and Francis Melliand.
The funeral will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Brian Arthur Strauch Funeral Homes & Cremation Services, 602 Birch St., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in St. John Neumann Parish, Nativity Church, Scranton. Interment will be at Abington Hills Cemetery, South Abington Twp.
