Merton Walter Evans

The Guest Book is expired.

Merton Walter Evans, 74, a recent resident at Golden Living Center, Tunkhannock, died Thursday.

He was born Feb. 19, 1938, in Scranton, the only child of Thomas and Dorothy Garey Evans. Mert was descended from a long line of Evans and Garey ancestors who lived in Wyoming County since the late 1700s. He was a resident of Wyoming County most of his life and graduated from Tunkhannock High School in 1957. Mr. Evans was an orderly for 34 years at Moses Taylor Hospital before retiring in 2001.

Mert's greatest loves were his parents, his automobiles and his collection of music, which he would often share with others. Being the son of a hired farm hand, he would often help his father in the many Wyoming County areas that they had lived while growing up. Merton always took care of his mother and even shared the same nursing home until her death in 2005, as they were both residents at the Golden Living Center at that time.

His cousin, David and wife, Gina, would like to thank the staff at Golden Living Center for all the care that was given to him, and to all of Mert's friends and co-workers at Moses Taylor Hospital for being at his side throughout his life's rewarding and most difficult times.

He is survived by numerous cousins, the closest cousin being, David Evans and his wife, Gina, from Nicholson.

Private services will be conducted at a later time with interment in the Jackson/LaGrange Cemetery in Osterhout.

A donation to one's favorite charity or organization would be Mert's only wish.
