James "Gravedigger" Buchinski, 73, a lifelong resident of Dickson City, died Saturday morning in the Commonwealth Hospice Care Unit in Geisinger Community Medical Center after an illness.

Son of the late Adam and Sophie Keslik Buchinski, he was born and raised in Dickson City, attending and graduating from Dickson City schools. Before retirement, he was a self-employed excavator/contractor. He and his brother, Rich, were well known throughout the area as the gravediggers. For years, they dug graves for several cemeteries from Jermyn to Dunmore, as well as numerous pools and house foundations throughout the area. He was a member of St. Mary's Visitation Church, Dickson City; and a member of the American Legion and DAV in Dickson City.

He was an outdoorsman. He loved fishing, hunting and was a big NASCAR fan. He truly enjoyed the years he got to be with Johnson's Towing as they worked the races at Pocono Raceway, Long Pond.

The family would like to thank the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the wonderful and passionate care they gave Jim.

He is survived by four sons, Joseph and James Buchinski, Dickson City; Mark Buchinski and wife, Lisa, Piscataway, N.J.; and Christopher Buchinski, his caregiver for the past two years with whom he resided; and their mother, his ex-wife, Betty Pisarski; a brother, Richard Buchinski and wife, Sylvia, Dickson City; four grandchildren, Christina, Alexzandra, Nicholas and Erin Buchinski; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Buchinski.

A blessing service will be celebrated by Deacon Jan Mroz Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Yurkanin Funeral Home, 1115 Main St., Dickson City.
