Nelson J. Goodman, 77, of Waverly, died Wednesday afternoon at the Commonwealth Hospice of Northeast Pa. at Regional Hospital of Scranton. His wife is the former Carole Benkaim.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Herman and Edna Lonker Goodman, he was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania and later graduated from the University of Scranton. Before retirement, he was the publisher of the Scranton Tribune and Scrantonian newspapers. He had served on numerous boards and was a member of the board of directors for Citizens Savings Bank.
Also surviving are sons, Andrew Goodman and wife, Joanne, Redondo Beach, Calif.; Jonathan Goodman and wife, Mary Jane, Clarks Summit; and Joshua Goodman, New York City; a sister, Barbara Ehrenpreis and husband, Sheldon, Scranton; four grandchildren; as well as nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the nurses on the eighth floor of Regional Hospital of Scranton, especially Joanne, Jess and Johnson.
The funeral will be Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with services by Rabbi Joseph Mendelsohn. Friends may call from 11:30 until the time of service. Interment, Temple Israel Cemetery, Dunmore.
Friends will be received during shiva at the Jewish Home, 1101 Vine St., Scranton on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
